Williams confirm Carlos Sainz F1 talks: “We want two world class drivers…”

9 months ago By Sports Desk

The Williams Formula 1 team has revealed that it is in serious talks with Carlos Sainz Jr. It’s about being able to move to the 2025 season. Team principal James Volls announced the news at the Canadian Grand Prix and highlighted a change in approach to Williams’ search for graduate drivers.

Carlos Sainz, currently at Ferrari, is a key player in the F1 driver market, especially after Sergio Perez announced his move to Red Bull. With options limited, Sainz’s two main options are joining the Audi project with Sauber or joining Williams. While there is little chance of him joining Mercedes, Toto Wolff’s choices appear to be leaning towards Andrea Kimi Antonelli if Max Verstappen is unavailable.

Williams is positioning itself as a leading team in Formula 1, largely due to its partnership with Mercedes to supply engines in 2026. It is expected that Mercedes will be the leader in power units when the new rules come into effect, making Williams an attractive option for Sainz.

During the press conference, Volls explained Williams’ interest in Sainz and how it reflects the team’s new philosophy: “Williams is not the same as it was three years ago.” Talking to Carlos also shows that we have changed our ways. We would like to have two world-class drivers on our team in the future. We want him to realise that we are really here and invest what it takes to get back on the front lines.

In addition, Volus mentioned that in the last 12 months, the team has been able to strengthen its structure and competitiveness by signing high-quality players from other teams. “By 2026, we will have one of the best, if not the best, power units in our cars. We will announce it soon, but we will be joined by about 30 great people from other teams.”

However, the final decision rests with the scientists. “Of course the difference is that he has a choice to come or not, and that’s up to him,” Volls says. Williams should have a strong driver line-up regardless of Sainz’s choice, with 10-race winner Valtteri Bottas strongly linked with a possible place in the team.

Asked if Sainz was convinced by Williams’ idea, Volls replied, “That’s hard to say.” I think he can see all our power. To me, from Williams, coming here seemed like an easy decision. But it’s a decision he has to make.”

This renewed approach by Williams shows its desire to become a competitive force in Formula 1 again, and signing a talented driver like Carlos Sainz would be an important step in that direction.
