Mike Trimby Inducted as MotoGP Legend at Silverstone

5 months ago By Sports Desk

On the last day at Silverstone, during the 2024 British MotoGP, an emotional ceremony was held to honor Mike Trimby, the founder and CEO of IRTA (International Road Racing Teams Association), who passed away during last September’s Misano round. Trimby became the first non-rider to be recognized as a MotoGP Legend, a tribute that reflects his lasting impact on the sport.

The official ceremony was attended by Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, Mike’s wife Irene, and Tony Congram of IRTA. Ezpeleta highlighted Trimby’s importance to MotoGP, saying, “Mike is the first person outside the tracks to become part of the MotoGP Legends. A large part of what MotoGP is today is due to Mike Trimby.”

Trimby began his journey representing riders in 1982, fighting for safety improvements. This pioneering role was not well-received by authorities at the time, but Trimby persevered. He led IRTA for over four decades, organizing riders, teams, paddock, grid, and facilities at all MotoGP events. His dedication to rider safety was fundamental to the sport’s development.

Ezpeleta recalled the beginning of his relationship with Trimby: “I met him many years ago when he was representing the riders, even before the creation of IRTA. I was the director of the Jarama Circuit and I remember his incredible effort. At that time, it was considered strange to represent the riders and not well accepted by the authorities. But Mike continued doing that and, with the creation of IRTA, did everything to improve rider safety.”

The partnership between IRTA, FIM, and Dorna, initiated in 1991, faced challenges but resulted in MotoGP’s current success. Ezpeleta emphasized, “Without Mike, I’m absolutely sure we wouldn’t be where we are now.”

Trimby’s influence extended beyond his official role. He was known for his characteristic British sense of humor and his ability to form lasting friendships, including with Ezpeleta, who highlighted the deep friendship they developed over the years.

Trimby’s passing in Misano was a moment of great sadness for the MotoGP community. Ezpeleta, emotionally, stated, “It was a very emotional moment when we received the news in Misano that Mike had passed away. Now, with Irene here, I think it’s the proper manner to show everyone how important Mike Trimby has been to all of us. I’m extremely happy to announce him as a MotoGP Legend because, really, MotoGP is what it is today thanks to Mike Trimby.”

Trimby’s induction as a MotoGP Legend at Silverstone is a fitting recognition of a man whose vision and determination indelibly shaped the sport, ensuring that safety and organization were top priorities. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of riders, teams, and MotoGP fans.
