Michael Dunlop Sets Pace at Isle of Man TT as He Chases All-Time Record

9 months ago By Sports Desk

Michael Dunlop kicked off his 2024 Isle of Man TT campaign with an impressive performance, setting the fastest pace in the Superbike class during the first day of qualifying. Driving a Honda Hawk Racing, Dunlop reached an average speed of 129.590 mph on Monday, which was a promising start to this world-famous event.

Isle of Man TT 2024: First qualifying results

Dunlop, whose father Robert, uncle Joey, and brother William lost their lives in motorcycle accidents, is just one win away from equaling the record of his uncle Joey, who has 26 TT wins. Last year, Dunlop took his 25th victory, closing a record that has remained unchanged for 24 years.

Impressive performance

Dunlop led the way around the Bergbaan, showing his skill and determination. Peter Hickman, another strong contender, came in third with a speed of 128.271 mph, while John McGuinness (127.646 mph) and Dean Harrison (125.909 mph) also showed significant improvements. Davey Todd, with a lap of 129.575 mph, was just 0.114 seconds behind Dunlop.

History and preparation

This year, Dunlop is determined to break his uncle’s record, a feat that would be both professionally and personally significant. After an accident earlier this year, Dunlop had to recover from a minor injury and recorded five third places in the North West 200.

For the TT, Dunlop will compete with a Honda Fireblade in the Superbike class. He will also use a Honda in the Superstock race but will switch to a 765cc Triumph in the Supersport category and will be on a Paton in the Supertwin.

Fierce competition

Dunlop’s journey to his 26th win will not be easy, as he will face high-level competition. Peter Hickman, who has won the last five Superstock races in a row and set a new track record of 136.358 mph last year, is one of the main challengers. Dean Harrison and Davey Todd are also expected to be strong contenders.

Expectations for the event

Competition at the Isle of Man TT is always intense and unpredictable. The combination of skill, strategy, and a bit of luck will be decisive in determining the winner. With Dunlop off to a strong start, expectations are high to see if he can make history and surpass his uncle’s record.

As qualifying and racing progress, motorcycle fans around the world will be watching closely and waiting to see if Michael Dunlop can achieve this historic milestone in the legendary Isle of Man TT.
