Mercedes Highlights Key Weakness Before Spanish GP
The Mercedes team, which had its best performance of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix, is now about to face an important test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Team principal Toto Wolff revealed that this weekend will be used to assess a “weakness” and whether the recent update to the car’s package, including the new front nose, has brought significant improvements.
Challenge at the Barcelona Circuit
Wolff highlighted that Mercedes has faced difficulties on circuits where there is a “wide variation in speeds” in the corners. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with its variety of low, medium, and high-speed corners, offers the team the opportunity to test whether recent advances have made a considerable difference.
“Barcelona will provide a good test of our progress,” said Wolff. “It has a mix of fast, medium, and slow corners, a long straight, and a lot of elevation variation. Circuits that have that wide variation in speed have been our weakness this year.”
Focus on Competition
Wolff also highlighted that the next races will be an opportunity for Mercedes to test itself against its main rivals, such as Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari. “We know that our competitors will perform well in the upcoming races, so we need to keep working hard to stay in contention for podiums and, eventually, victories.”
This weekend will be pivotal for Mercedes as they look to confirm they are back on the path to victory, something that has been a hallmark of the team’s heyday.
Opportunity to overcome
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya assessment will provide Mercedes with an important reference point for its latest updates and allow the team to assess its progress. If Mercedes can excel at this challenging circuit, it would indicate a substantial improvement at the start of the season.
With this assessment and recent advances, Wolff hopes that Mercedes is finally ready to compete on equal terms against its strongest rivals.
