Lewis Hamilton, Fined And Reprimand After Crossing The Track In Qatar

1 years ago By Sports Desk

In the high-speed world of Formula 1, split-second decisions and daring maneuvers are part of a driver’s everyday life. However, the Qatar Grand Prix in 2023 brought forth a different kind of drama for Lewis Hamilton.

The seven-time World Champion found himself facing not only the scorching heat of the Los Angeles International Circuit but also the scrutiny of the FIA stewards for his actions during the race.

In a surprising turn of events, Hamilton was fined and reprimanded for crossing an active track, a move that left the racing community abuzz.

The Qatar Grand Prix:

A High-Stakes Showdown The Qatar Grand Prix was already marked by intense competition, with Max Verstappen leading the championship battle against Lewis Hamilton.

The Losail International Circuit in Doha provided the backdrop for this crucial race, and tensions were running high. However, amidst the excitement and adrenaline-fueled action, the race took an unexpected turn for Hamilton.

A Lap 1 collision with teammate George Russell resulted in a broken right rear wheel, forcing Hamilton’s retirement from the race. But the drama didn’t end there.

A Risky Move Under the Safety Ca As the safety car took control of the field following the early chaos, Lewis Hamilton made a move that would spark controversy.

He decided to cross the live circuit from the outside of Turn 1 to reach the pitlane on the inside.

This daring move occurred just seconds before his teammate, George Russell, emerged from the pits. Hamilton’s dash across the active track raised eyebrows and prompted questions about the safety of such a move. The FIA stewards wasted no time in scrutinizing the incident, leading to an inquiry that would have implications for the seven-time World Champion.

FIA Stewards’ Verdict:

A Fine and a Reprimand Following the race, Lewis Hamilton appeared before the FIA stewards, where he expressed regret for his actions. The stewards’ verdict was a combination of both discipline and understanding. Hamilton received his first reprimand of the 2023 season, signaling that the FIA acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

Additionally, he was slapped with a substantial €50,000 fine, with half of that amount suspended for the remainder of the season. This financial penalty served as a stark reminder of the importance of safety and adherence to regulations in the sport.

The Stewards’ Explanation:

A Close Call In their official verdict, the FIA stewards provided insight into the incident. They noted, “After crashing out of the race in Lap 1, the driver of Car 44 abandoned his car in the gravel and ran back to the pits.

He thereby crossed the track that was live at this time and reached the inside edge of the track just seconds before Car 63 [George Russell] arrived at high speed after exiting the pits.

He then continued to walk alongside the track until finally exiting the track.” The stewards emphasized that the act of crossing a live track can result in extremely dangerous situations, not only for the driver involved but also for others on the track.

The need for caution in such scenarios was underlined as a crucial aspect of driver responsibility.

No Further Action on Collision:

A Racing Incident Interestingly, while Hamilton faced penalties for his actions under the safety car, the stewards opted not to take further action regarding the collision with George Russell. Although Hamilton was predominantly at fault for the incident, it was classified as a typical first-lap racing incident. Such incidents during the opening lap of a race are often to deal with leniency, considering the chaos and close quarters in which drivers find themselves.

Hamilton’s Public Apology:

Taking Responsibility In the aftermath of the race, Lewis Hamilton publicly addressed the incident and issued a heartfelt apology. He stated, “I’ve watched the replay, and it was 100% my fault, and I take full responsibility. Apologies to my team and to George.”

Hamilton’s willingness to accept responsibility for his actions was a testament to his commitment to the sport’s integrity and safety. Russell’s Understanding: Mutual Respect George Russell, the other party involved in the Lap 1 collision, displayed maturity and understanding in response to the incident.

He commented, “Lewis and I, we’ll be fine. We’ve got a huge respect for each other; nothing was intentional from either side.” Russell’s sportsmanship highlighted the mutual respect that exists among competitors in Formula 1, even in the midst of heated battles.

Conclusion:

Lessons in Responsibility and Safety The incident that unfolded during the Qatar Grand Prix served as a reminder of the complexities and challenges that Formula 1 drivers face, both on and off the track. Lewis Hamilton’s fine and reprimand underscored the critical importance of safety protocols and adherence to regulations, even for a seasoned champion.

As the Formula 1 season continues, this incident serves as a valuable lesson for all drivers and teams. Safety and responsible racing must always be at the forefront, no matter the circumstances. While the Qatar Grand Prix will be in memory for many reasons, it will undoubtedly go down in history as the race where Lewis Hamilton faced the consequences of a daring move and learned a valuable lesson in responsibility and safety.
