Hamilton And The Coming And Going Of Mercedes: “This Car Is Impossible”

2 years ago By Sports Desk

In the world of Formula 1, where every millisecond counts, the performance of a car can often be the difference between victory and defeat. For Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, the 2023 season has been a rollercoaster ride, with moments of brilliance followed by perplexing struggles. The Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka highlighted the complex challenge Mercedes faces, leaving Hamilton to declare, “This car is impossible.”

Friday’s Foreboding Signs

The ominous signs for Mercedes appeared during Friday’s practice sessions at Suzuka. Hamilton quickly realized that their chances of securing pole position or victory were slim. In a sport where confidence and precision are paramount, Hamilton’s early assessment hinted at the difficulties he and his team were grappling with.

Mercedes’ Unstable Car

Mercedes’ struggles in 2023 can be traced back to the instability of their car. One of the peculiar issues they’ve encountered is “porpoising,” a phenomenon where the car oscillates vertically. This instability has greatly affected their performance and resulted in a car that behaves like “trying to balance on the tip of a knife,” as Hamilton vividly described it.

The Unattainable balance

For Hamilton and his engineers, achieving the perfect balance in their car seems like chasing a mirage. The car’s characteristics swing between extremes—from severe oversteer to troublesome understeer. Each race weekend becomes a quest to find that elusive equilibrium, and, as Hamilton confessed, it’s “very, very difficult to achieve every weekend.”

A Glimpse of Hope

Despite the gloomy outlook, there were moments of optimism during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend. Hamilton praised his team’s efforts and the changes made overnight that made the car “feel nice to drive.” These glimmers of progress offered a brief respite from the frustration of an inconsistent car.

As the 2023 season unfolds, Mercedes faces a conundrum: how to tame a car that swings between extremes. The “impossible” nature of their car leaves Hamilton and his team grappling with the intricacies of Formula 1, where the coming and going of fortunes is a constant reality.
