8 months ago By Walter Thompson

Max Verstappen continued his reign of dominance in the 2023 Formula One season at the Mexican Grand Prix, securing another victory and setting a new record for the most wins in a single season. Behind Verstappen’s triumph, British drivers put on a stunning show, with Lewis Hamilton securing second place and setting the stage for an intense battle in the drivers’ championship.

Young talent Lando Norris delivered a masterclass in overtaking, charging from 17th on the grid to an impressive fifth-place finish, while Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium for Ferrari.

Verstappen’s Record-Breaking Season

Max Verstappen’s victory in Mexico was no ordinary win. It marked his 16th triumph of the season, surpassing his own record of 15 victories set just a year ago. With this win, Verstappen achieved his 51st career victory, a milestone that equals the legendary Alain Prost’s tally. He now stands fourth on the all-time wins list, behind only Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, and Sebastian Vettel.

Verstappen’s Dominance on Display

The Mexican Grand Prix showcased Verstappen’s absolute dominance on the track. Starting from third on the grid, he executed a flawless start, overtaking both Ferraris before the first turn. From there, he never looked back, leading the race unchallenged. Verstappen finished a staggering 14 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, making it abundantly clear that he was in a league of his own.

Hamilton’s Heroic Charge

While Verstappen cruised at the front, Lewis Hamilton delivered a spectacular performance, starting from sixth on the grid. His determined drive was nothing short of heroic, showcasing the skills that have made him a seven-time world champion. Hamilton executed daring overtakes, including impressive passes on Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz. However, the highlight of his race was a late-braking maneuver on Charles Leclerc, securing him a well-deserved second-place finish.

Hamilton expressed his elation with the result, praising his team’s strategy and performance. He said, “I am so happy with that—a great pit stop, great strategy. It was a difficult weekend, but to come away with good points is mega. I’m really proud of the team.”

Mercedes’ Redemption

Mercedes’ Team Principal, Toto Wolff, was equally thrilled with the team’s performance. The strong showing in Mexico was indicative of the effectiveness of the car’s upgrade introduced in the previous round. Wolff remarked, “The smile is because the car was strong. It was a brilliant, brilliant drive. It gives us confidence in the routes we are taking.”

Pérez’s Setback

For the Mexican driver Sergio Pérez, the home race turned into a disappointment. His ambitious attempt to pass Charles Leclerc on the first lap ended in a collision, forcing Pérez to retire. Pérez’s inconsistent form has reignited Hamilton’s hopes of claiming second place in the drivers’ championship. With three races remaining, Hamilton now trails Pérez by just 20 points.

Norris’s stunning performance

Lando Norris delivered an outstanding performance in Mexico, showcasing his remarkable overtaking skills. Starting from a lowly 17th on the grid, Norris climbed through the ranks with aggression and precision. He executed a series of brilliantly timed passes, including a decisive move on George Russell in the closing laps. Norris expressed his delight with the race, saying, “I didn’t think I would get back to P5, but I played the overtakes well. It’s enjoyable racing like this.”

Pérez’s Uncertain Future

Sergio Pérez’s unfortunate crash at his home Grand Prix adds uncertainty to his future at Red Bull Racing. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Hamilton see hope for the upcoming season as they sense the possibility of challenging Verstappen’s dominance.

Leclerc Completes the Podium

Charles Leclerc secured a podium finish for Ferrari, displaying his consistency and ability to capitalize on opportunities. His third-place result added valuable points to Ferrari’s tally in the constructors’ championship.

Race Summary

The Mexican Grand Prix demonstrated the unyielding supremacy of Max Verstappen in the 2023 Formula One season. His record-breaking performance solidified his place among the sport’s legends. However, it was also a race where British drivers stood out. Lewis Hamilton’s heroic drive, Lando Norris’s stunning overtaking prowess, and Charles Leclerc’s podium finish provided spectators with thrilling racing action.

The 2023 Mexican Grand Prix was a race to remember. Max Verstappen’s dominance continued, setting new records and establishing himself as one of the sport’s greats. While Verstappen’s victory was unquestionably the highlight, the superb performances by Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, and Charles Leclerc added depth and excitement to the event. With the Formula One season nearing its climax, the competition remains fierce, promising more thrilling races in the future.
