With its release on June 16, 2023, fans of the franchise were eagerly anticipating the next level of realism, immersive gameplay, and exciting features. This review will analyze the game, highlighting its strengths, weaknesses, and overall impression.

Game Basics

Publisher: EA Sports

Originally released for PCs, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and 5.

Gaming engine: Ego Engine 4.0

Graphics and visuals:

F1 23 boasts stunning graphics and visuals that enhance the gaming experience. The attention to detail in recreating the iconic Formula 1 tracks is commendable. From the realistic weather effects to the meticulously designed cars, the game truly immerses players in the world of Formula 1. The improved lighting and particle effects add a layer of authenticity, making the races visually captivating.

Gameplay and controls:

The gameplay in F1 23 offers a satisfying blend of simulation and accessibility. Players can choose between various game modes, including a career mode, single-player races, and online multiplayer. The career mode allows players to start as rookie drivers and progress through the ranks, signing contracts with different teams and competing for championships. The controls are responsive and intuitive, offering a smooth driving experience. The addition of a customizable difficulty level ensures that both casual players and racing enthusiasts can enjoy the game.

Re-entry of the story mode ‘Braking Point

F1 23 sees the return of the famous story mode from the F1 21 edition. The story mode, which had been omitted in F1 22, continues here.

Now termed Breaking Point 2.0, it sees the return of ‘Aiden Jackson’, the main protagonist from the 22 edition. The story continues along the same line after the events of F1 21, as Aiden joins a new team with Devon Butler, the main antagonist of the 21 storyline, as his teammate. It also features an F2 storyline where the rise of  ‘Callie Mayer’, the lone female driver in the F2 championships, is shown. She was also later revealed to be Devon Butler’s sister.

Realism and Authenticity:

F1 23 excels at capturing the essence of Formula 1 racing. The Ego engine provides a realistic representation of the vehicles’ handling, allowing players to feel the nuances of each track and make strategic decisions on tyre wear, fuel consumption, and aerodynamics. The inclusion of dynamic weather conditions adds an extra layer of challenge, as players must adapt their driving style to changing track conditions. The game also features authentic team liveries, driver animations, and accurate audio effects, as it has F1 copyrights, further enhancing the immersion.

Content and Features:

The game offers an extensive lineup of content and features. In addition to the official Formula 1 team and drivers, F1 23 introduces classic cars and legendary drivers from previous eras, allowing players to relive iconic moments in Formula 1 history. The inclusion of a robust multiplayer mode adds replayability, enabling players to compete against others from around the world. The game also features a comprehensive customization system, allowing players to personalize their cars and drivers with a wide range of options.

Improvements and Room for Growth:

While F1 23 is an impressive racing game, there are a few areas that could be further improved. One aspect is the artificial intelligence of computer-controlled opponents, which occasionally exhibits unrealistic behavior and lacks strategic decision-making. Additionally, while the inclusion of classic cars is a welcome feature, a deeper historical mode or campaign would have further enriched the experience for fans of Formula 1’s rich history. Overall, F1 23 is a remarkable addition to the Formula 1 gaming franchise. Its stunning graphics, immersive gameplay, and attention to detail make it a must-play for racing enthusiasts. The game successfully captures the essence of Formula 1, offering a realistic and authentic racing experience. With its extensive content and features, F1 23 provides hours of entertainment that will appeal to both casual players and die-hard fans of the sport. Despite a few areas for improvement, the game sets a new benchmark for Formula 1 racing games and leaves players eagerly anticipating future iterations of the series.
