Carlos Sainz receives warning from Williams about ‘stepping stone’ move

1 years ago By Sports Desk

Carlos Sainz Jr., Ferrari driver, is at the center of attention as he considers his future in Formula 1, with Williams viewing him as a top candidate for their available seat in 2025. However, the team has made it clear that they do not want to be seen as a “stepping stone” in his career.

James Vowles, the head of Williams, has been transparent about what the team expects from a new driver. In an interview with Talksport, Vowles emphasized that Williams is looking for a driver who is committed to the team’s project and understands the importance of being part of Williams’ journey, both now and in the future. “What I want is a driver who also wants to be part of our journey, who really understands what Williams is about and is willing to make that a central part of what they are doing on track,” Vowles said.

Sainz is currently weighing his options and is in no rush to make a decision, as he watches the movements at Red Bull and Mercedes, as well as other opportunities with Alpine and Sauber/Audi. While Williams is keen to secure Sainz, Vowles has made it clear that the team does not want to be merely a stepping stone in a driver’s career.

Vowles, who took over at Williams at the start of last year after years as Mercedes’ head of strategy, has also faced speculation that his move to Williams was a stepping stone to return to Mercedes in the future. However, Vowles has denied this idea, stating that his intention is to invest deeply and meaningfully in Williams. “I’m not here because I’m bored of winning. I came here to invest in something that is mine, that has my fingerprint and that of everyone else involved in the organization,” Vowles explained. “That’s important to me and to the team.”

The Williams chief emphasized the need for a long-term relationship, where the driver not only contributes to the team’s growth but also commits genuinely to the project. The message to Sainz is clear: Williams wants a driver who is ready to engage deeply with the team and not just use it as a springboard to other opportunities.

As the 2025 season approaches, negotiations and decisions will intensify, and it will be crucial for Sainz to evaluate not only short-term opportunities but also the long-term impact of his choices on his career.
