Martin Blames Setbacks in Indonesia and Australia for Losing MotoGP Championship to Bagnaia

1 years ago By Sports Desk

Jorge Martin blames the setbacks in Indonesia and Australia for losing the 2023 MotoGP championship to Peco Bagnaia.

After making his first significant error in eleven Grand Prix, Martin made an unnecessary tyre gamble in Australia a week later, which caused him to fall from first to fifth position on the very last lap.

Thus, Martin’s 7-point advantage following the Indonesian Sprint turned into a 27-point disadvantage following Australia.

“With what we accomplished this season as a satellite squad, we made history. The thirteen victories, every podium, and every lap in the lead make me happy. I thought the work was excellent,” Martin remarked. “We achieved much more than the goal, which was to place among the top three in the title. Of course, you don’t want to lose it when you’re that close to [the title].

The Pramac Ducati driver has consistently performed at an elite level throughout the seasons, giving Peco Bainaia the ultimate fight for the championship.

After taking a 7-point lead in the Saturday sprint race of the Indonesian Gp over championship rival Peco Bagnaia, the Spanish driver took a healthy early lead in the main race on Sunday, but in the end, he crashed out of the lead, and eventually Peco Bagnaia took the first prize in the race.

This disappointing result was soon followed by another mistake in the Australian GP, where tyre gambling caused him to retyre from the race, whereas his rival Peco Bagnaia finished the Australian GP with a 2nd-place podium finish.

These rare mistakes from Jorge Martin eventually resulted in the 7-point lead becoming a 27-point deficit after the weekend in AustralianGP.

Surely there were still chances for Martin to win the championship after these two races, but speaking in a recent interview, he particularly underlined these races for losing the championship to Peco Bagnaia.
