Mercedes F1 Set To Change “All Components” Of Its Car By 2024

1 years ago By Sports Desk

The German manufacturer “has survived,” as Lewis Hamilton said after Abu Dhabi, a difficult 2023 season in which. Despite finishing second in the constructors’ championship, they proved to be far behind the dominant team, Red Bull.

The team soon realised that they had made the wrong decision with the aerodynamic configuration of their car and, although they made quite important changes starting at the Monaco GP, it was not enough to get back to the front and fight for victories. Toto Wolff, director of the star’s team, once the weekend was over revealed the magnitude of the changes that are being carried out in the car that will compete in 2024.

“We’re changing the concept,” Wolff said. “We are completely changing the chassis layout, weight distribution and airflow.” “I mean there are changes in almost every component because just by doing that, I think we have a chance. We could make mistakes too. So, between not winning what we expect or catching up and taking a big step forward, everything is possible”. Asked whether there was optimism or scepticism as to whether the new concept car would be good enough to get Mercedes back into title contention, Wolff said: I have never felt optimistic about anything in my life.

“It may sound a little pessimistic, but it’s something that has always protected me from managing my expectations and makes me push harder. Because I think it’s never good enough. That’s why I sit here with a bittersweet feeling. We finished second [in the constructors’ championship], but we lost first place.

Although Mercedes was able to celebrate runner-up in the constructors’ championship at last weekend’s  Abu Dhabi GP, Wolff said he still had mixed feelings about 2023. Asked by Motorsport.com whether finishing the year in second place was something to celebrate or they should just move on, he said: “I think we have to accept it, be humble about it and take it into account. However, we have to climb Everest to catch Red Bull.”

“I do not doubt that McLaren  will be in the fight next year, and perhaps Aston Martin and others will also join the battle.”

“We must leave no stone unturned, and that is what we do in Brixworth and Brackley. And as hard as it is to remember that it is only second place, it is also a great opportunity to come back and fight for victories,” concluded the boss of Mercedes in Formula 1.
