5 Talking Points From F1 United States GP 2023

1 years ago By Sports Desk

The United States Grand Prix of 2023 delivered a rollercoaster of emotions and dramatic turns that had Formula 1 fans on the edge of their seats. From strategic blunders to disqualifications and fiery exchanges, here are the five key talking points from this unforgettable race.

1. Mercedes’ Tactical Misstep:

The race weekend started with questions about Mercedes’ strategy. Lewis Hamilton, one of the sport’s most celebrated drivers, faced a tough battle from the get-go. As he and Max Verstappen, who impressively started from sixth, navigated their way through the field, it was Lando Norris who led the early stages, showcasing McLaren’s improved performance.

Verstappen was the first to pit, followed by Norris. However, Mercedes decided to keep Hamilton out, contemplating a one-stop strategy. With limited data due to the format of a sprint race weekend, this decision proved costly. Hamilton lost about 10 seconds to Verstappen in just five laps, leaving him with a mountain to climb.

Verstappen eventually overtook Norris, but Hamilton remained in contention. He later passed Norris for second, but catching Verstappen, who was on harder tires, proved too difficult. This strategic blunder left fans wondering whether a different approach could have secured a win for Hamilton.

2. Disqualifications Alter the Landscape:

Just when the excitement seemed to have peaked, a shocking twist unfolded. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified from the race due to excessive wear on the underfloor ‘plank.’ Mercedes, encouraged by their car’s performance upgrades, had run their car too low on one of the bumpiest tracks on the calendar.

This revelation raised questions about the actual progress Mercedes had made with their car. Hamilton, a seven-time champion, now had to face a bitter blow. The disqualifications changed the race results and cast a shadow over what had initially seemed like a strong performance by Mercedes.

3. Verstappen’s Fiery Side:

The 2023 US Grand Prix also provided a glimpse of Max Verstappen’s temperament under pressure. The Dutch driver, despite having one of the most dominant cars in F1 history, showcased his petulant side during the race.

Verstappen complained about a braking issue and exchanged heated words with his engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, leading to numerous bleeps to censor his choice language. At one point, he even labeled his dominant car as “a piece of ****.” While Verstappen’s driving prowess is unquestionable, his fiery outbursts can be seen as a less attractive aspect of his character.

4. Impact of Disqualifications:

The disqualifications of Hamilton and Leclerc had a domino effect on the race results. Lando Norris, who had already secured a fine third place, was promoted to second. Carlos Sainz found himself on the podium, benefiting from a team order that saw him pass Leclerc. Ferrari’s one-stop strategy decision, which went horribly wrong, further added to the chaos.

Sergio Perez moved up to fourth, George Russell claimed fifth, and Pierre Gasly secured sixth for Alpine. This reshuffling of the order had wider implications, especially for a team with new celebrity stakeholders.

5. McLaren Overtakes Aston Martin:

Lando Norris’s performance in Austin not only brought him closer to the championship leaders but also had significant consequences for McLaren as a team. As a result of his strong finish, McLaren overtook Aston Martin in the constructor’s standings.

Despite challenges like Oscar Piastri’s early retirement and Fernando Alonso’s non-finish due to floor damage, McLaren now holds a six-point lead over their rivals. This shift in the standings reflects the dynamic nature of Formula 1 and the unpredictable twists and turns it offers.

While AlphaTauri remains at the bottom of the team standings, Tsunoda’s performance brought them within striking distance of Haas, with only two points separating them. With four races left in the season, this late surge could make a significant difference in the final standings.

In conclusion, the 2023 United States Grand Prix was a perfect example of the unpredictable and thrilling nature of Formula 1. From strategic miscalculations to disqualifications, fiery exchanges, and unexpected shifts in the standings, this race had it all. As the season progresses, fans can only hope for more of such breathtaking moments and incredible battles on the track.
